Tel Mar Elias: A Sacred Journey Through Jordan’s Natural Beauty

July 23, 2024

The archaeological site of Tel Mar Elias holds deep spiritual and historical significance. This ancient location has been revered as a holy site for millennia by peoples belonging in different monotheistic traditions. Located slightly outside the town limits and northwest of Ajloun in the Ajloun Governorate, northern Jordan, Tel Mar Elias belongs in the historical region of Gilead. This ancient tell (i.e., archaeological mound) offers visitors an outstanding glimpse into ancient history (not to mention its breathtaking scenery), making it a must-see stop on the Jordan Trail.

Tel Mar Elias, or the Hill of Elijah, is dedicated to the memory of the Prophet Elijah, a figure of profound importance in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Elijah’s story is rich and multifaceted: in Judaism, he is celebrated for his miracles and his staunch defense of monotheism. Christianity sees him as a precursor to John the Baptist and a symbol of prophetic authority, while Islam honors Nebhī-Ilyâs as a prophet who advocated the worship of the one true God.

One of the most compelling aspects of Tel Mar Elias are the remains of a Byzantine basilica –a testament to the site’s long history. The ruins of this ancient church include some well-preserved mosaic floors and deep water cisterns, adding yet another layer of historical depth to the experience. Pilgrims and visitors alike are drawn to this site, where they can pay their respects to Elijah, tie red ribbons to a tree beside the ruins of the basilica, and participate in a timeless tradition of hope and shared prayer.

The natural beauty of Tel Mar Elias is equally captivating. As visitors ascend to the site, they are greeted with sweeping vistas of the surrounding landscape. The rugged yet lushy terrain and rolling hills provide a serene escape into nature, making the area perfect for contemplation and reflection. The site’s location on the Jordan Trail, the renowned hiking and pilgrimage route that stretches from the north to the south of Jordan, makes the site even more appealing. Hikers are treated not only to the spiritual significance of the site, but also to the diverse and breathtaking landscapes of Jordan.

Tel Mar Elias serves as a unique ecumenical meeting place where people of all faiths and walks of life come together. This harmony of spiritual and cultural exchange enriches the experience and fosters a sense of community and mutual respect. Whether you are a pilgrim or just a traveler seeking a connection to the natural world and the history of this fascinating land, Tel Mar Elias offers a deeply enriching stop to your journey.
