This wilderness on the eastern banks of the Jordan River is where John the Baptist lived, preached and baptized Jesus. Just opposite Jericho, this “Place of Baptism” provides a special link between the prophets Elijah and John the Baptist. This City of Mosaics was an ecclesiastical center during the Byzantine Era. Madaba is home to the "Madaba Map," the oldest surviving mosaic map of the Holy Land, found on the floor of the Orthodox Church of St. George.

According to the Bible, Moses climbed Mount Nebo (Pisgah) to see the Promised Land that he would never enter. The Bible says that God himself buried Moses here, in a place unknown to man. Today, visitors can take in the panoramic vista, and see the extensive mosaic remains of early Christian churches. As custodians of this special place, the Franciscans have a small monastery here, and sometimes are able to personally welcome pilgrims to this holy mountain.
