With the arrival of the holiday season each winter in Jordan, the Christmas spirit is felt and enjoyed by many Jordanians as Christmas music, lights, and decorations light up neighborhoods across the kingdom.

The Christmas season is not only celebrated by Jordanian Christians but numerous Muslim families also enjoy celebrating the special time of year with their fellow citizens. From attending Christmas markets and holiday concerts together to introducing children to Santa and his helpers at various holiday events, the season is a special time filled with joy, unity, and memorable celebrations for many Jordanians.

The Boulevard, Amman

Jordan’s capital city of Amman is renowned for hosting Christmas markets and bazaars every winter. This year, The Boulevard in Abdali, Amman’s downtown pedestrian area that features shops, restaurants, cafes, and residences, hosted its annual outdoors Christmas market that is held throughout the holiday season. The market kicked off with its Christmas tree lighting ceremony that Jordanians from all backgrounds attended to watch. The market is decorated with beautiful seasonal lights, large Christmas ornaments, and cottage style kiosks.

It also includes activities, such as cooking workshops, carousal rides, and choir performances for children and families to enjoy. As it brings people together and spreads the Christmas spirit in Amman each season, The Boulevard’s market has become one of the most favored holiday traditions.

Another popular tradition among many Christian families who celebrate Christmas in Jordan is coming together to bake seasonal cookies. Many families especially enjoy baking “kaak and maamoul,” a famous round shaped, date-filled cookie that is topped with powdered sugar. Mothers, grandmothers, and children gather around the kitchen table with Christmas music playing in the background as they bake the treats with one another. For those who may be interested in baking these cookies at home, the recipe by “The Delicious Crescent” is easy to follow.

Christmas in Amman is always remembered not only for its fun-filled events and traditions, but also for the joyful and beautiful spirit that it spreads across the kingdom every year.
